You see, to get traffic onto your site, you have to think backwards. Where do people look when they need information? Yes, they search using search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN, to name the more popular ones.
So, to get these people to visit your blog, your blog needs to rank high on results pages of these search engines. When people search for information through the search engines and see your site among the top results, they will naturally click through to your blog!
The art of getting your blog or website high rankings on search results pages is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. It is a complex and technical subject to master, but that will not stop you from learning some simple, yet effective techniques, to conquer the search engines for certain keywords. The more complex techniques are usually needed to fight for very competitive and general keywords such as “fat loss”. I’ll teach you how to overcome that later.
For now, let’s determine the best keywords to optimize your site for.
For example, your blog talks about tech gadgets. Now, you’d want to check in Google whether it is a very competetive keyword. At this time of writing, there are 29, 000 ,000 (twenty-nine-million!) search results. Think you can beat 29,000,000 sites at your first attempt? I don’t think so. In fact, I know absolutely that you cannot.
Let’s try to narrow our scope to keywords you can successfully optimize for. Let’s look for the keywords – “technological gadgets”. At this time of writing, Google lists 792,000 results. That’s more manageable but still not narrow enough. You would still need to search for more focused keywords. An example is – “technological lap top gadgets”, however, let’s optimize your blog for “technological gadgets” just for the sake of learning.
First, you have to pay attention to the title of your blog. Since you’re optimizing for technological gadgets, you need to have that exact phrase in your blog title.
For example, a line like “Your Best Technological Gadget Blog!” would work great.
You can change the title of your blog in the Blogger control panel or the WordPress blog when you’re creating it. If you’re proficient with HTML, you can even do that on other blog engines like Moveable Type. Bottom line? Learn a little HTML! Note: You will find some resources in the sidebar of this site for optimizing your blog.
Other than that, your page heading should also contain the term you’re optimizing for. The page heading is the bit of text in your template code that is enclosed within the tags. This is important as it tells the search engines what your page is about (in this case, “technological gadgets”). Since we’re posting a blog, the tags are usually the post titles, so remember to include the term there whenever relevant. For example, write an article/post titled – “Cheap Technological Gadgets for Everyone!”. It has your keywords in the headline.
You should also sprinkle the words “technological gadgets” in your posts whenever possible. The frequent occurrence of that phrase in your blog will hint to the search engines that your blog is really relevant to that topic. But, don’t overdo it. Use of the term “technological gadgets” just a couple of times in your posts is quite enough. More than that and it may appear as spam to the search engines and, more important, your readers will feel the same way. The real downside to over use of the same keywords in a single article is that the search engines may de-list your blog and you will be cast out into the internet darkness.
So, keep this in mind: Write for humans, not for search engines, using your targeted keywords!

At the end of last month, Google rolled out a new page offering advice to those seeking a search engine optimization firm. Since being unveiled, there’s been both support and criticism of the tips and recommendations that Google has posted in various SEO forums.
From my perspective, most of what Google has posted is sensible advice and positive for the SEO community as a whole, especially compared to what was said by Google previously about SEOs, within its help area:
“Be very careful about allowing an individual consultant or company to ‘optimize’ your web site. Chances are they will engage in some of our ‘Don’ts’ and end up hurting your site.”
A brief and fairly negative statement, to say the least. The impression one comes away with is that most SEOs are likely to cause you problems, so you’re better off avoiding them. Compare that to what Google’s now saying:
“Many SEOs provide useful services for website owners, from writing copy to giving advice on site architecture and helping to find relevant directories to which a site can be submitted. However, there are a few unethical SEOs who have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to unfairly manipulate search engine results.”
So, congratulations, SEOs! Google, in my opinion, is legitimizing the majority of you and certainly the industry.
For its part, Google actually denies that there has been any significant change in its view toward SEOs. The company notes — accurately, I would add — that it has worked with the SEO community for some time, speaking at conferences, posting information within its own web site and via public forums. If the tone on its help pages now seems more positive toward SEOs, Google says it is just now wording things better.
“Maybe we are expressing it more clearly. Certainly there’s always room for a consultant that gives you good advice,” said Matt Cutts, a software engineer at Google who deals with webmaster issues. “The intent is not to be negative or positive [about SEOs] but provide more information.”
Whatever the reason behind the change, I think it clearly gives the general public a more positive impression about SEOs from Google. However, Google says the main intent behind the page is educational. Google wants the public to understand how to choose an SEO wisely, so they are not likely to encounter problems getting listed with Google or other search engines.
“The overall goal is to give people the tools so that they can assess a decision about search engine optimization,” said Cutts.
Let’s take a closer look at some of those tips.
Some SEOs may try to sell you the ability to type keywords directly into the browser address bar
This tip really stood out in my mind, because there are definitely people out there selling namespace services via dubious practices. However, these pitches have nothing to do with Google. Instead, they involve Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
So why’s Google calling this out? The company says it’s just trying to educate people generally about SEO-related issues, regardless of whether they are Google-specific.
“It goes back to Google just trying to do the right thing, the same way we did with the pop-up page,” Cutts said, referring to an educational page the company posted earlier this year on pop-up ads.
To learn more about problems with namespace pitches, see my recent article, RealNames Clones Causing Confusion. I also expect to revisit the issue in the near future, because I continue to get emails from people confused by misleading pitches. If anything, it would be nice to see Microsoft itself, rather than Google, make a loud, public statement on the issue.
Nice advice, but then Google doesn’t offer any real help on how to do this. That’s OK, I’ll fill in some blanks.
Finding Search Engine Optimization Professionals is a fairly recent SearchDay article that talks about three SEO directories. Both SeoPros.org and the SEO Consultants Directory are directories that screen who is allowed in, while SEMList.com allows anyone to list themselves and information about their companies.
MarketingSherpa.com publishes a Buyers’ Guide to Search Engine Optimization Firms. My last review was of the first edition, but I’ve skimmed the second edition and still think it is well worth the money for anyone thinking about hiring an SEO firm. Along with reviews, the guide offers a lot of helpful advice.

How long a company has been in business is good, but number of staffers isn’t necessarily relevant. You could find a small firm of only one or two people that is great. They may not have more people because they don’t want to grow beyond that.
On the forums, I saw several posts questioning the wisdom of this tip, as well. For its part, Google explains that it didn’t mean to suggest that companies with big full-time staffs are better than others. Instead, Google says it is really suggesting that consumers learn more details about the company, period.
“We are not making this general statement that the number of people matters,” Cutts said. “This is more an example of doing your homework.”
Hopefully, Google will look again at the wording. A simple change to something like, “You should ask how long a company has been in business, who is employed there, how did those employees gain their experience?,” might get across Google’s point that you should learn more about a company before engaging them without the focus seeming to be on number of employees.

Sorry, I completely disagree, and I’m far from alone, judging from forum posts and other comments I’ve read. You can indeed be an ethical SEO without also playing the role of Google’s volunteer spam police.
In fact, there are plenty of “ethical” SEO firms that feel that reporting spam actually can be an unethical practice. These firms feel like they should focus on doing positive work — promoting their clients, rather than getting involved in negative work of expending time reporting spam.

Personally, I like PayPerPost because it’s their specialty and this is their “posties” livlihood, so they tend to do a great job. It’s extremely reliable and great for social networking but considerably slower and ultimately more expensive than the following methods if your goal is simply link building.
Google SEO Linking Strategy Two: Use article marketing focused on your site’s topic.
Offering free yet valuable content to the publishers, and ultimately readers, of blogs, newsletters and article directories is among the the fastest and most reliable ways to get high quality inbound links with minimal expense. But even more important to some is that if you share your expertise the right way, you will likely become a recognized expert in your field in no time.
People have filled entire books on the subject of article marketing so let me just hit the highlights here. This will be enough to get you started and help your name become trusted by both publishers and readers alike. Just remember these six simple guidelines…
1.) The article has to accomplish two things. First, it has to be 100% legitimate and not contain any inflated facts or sales pitches. And second it absolutely must present real value to the reader and the publisher. Don’t ever write an article just for your own sake. A solely self serving article will be immediately transparent to the publisher and to most readers. Most people understand you want something in return for sharing your knowledge and are very happy to oblige a mutually beneficial arrangement, such as a great article for a link back in your bio.
2.) Obey the rules of where you are submitting your work. This is extremely important! Don’t waste an editor or publisher’s time. Be sure to select the best, and most descriptive category possible for your submission.
3.) You can (and in my opinion, should) write in a casual, conversational style but be careful to spell check the article and review it for clarity before submitting it. Once you have written something, especially something with your name attached to it, it will be a representation of you.
4.) Make the article the appropriate length for what you have to say. Don’t drone on or cut it too short. Most article directories have guidelines about how long they like to see submissions. The same goes for newsletters. If you can’t find this info for the directory you like, sticking between 500 and 1,000 words is usually a safe bet and usually up to 1,250 is OK. If you have more to say, consider splitting it into multiple articles that deal with one specific topic each.
5.) Be brief in your bio section. If your article is well written and contains similar words to the keywords you want to be found for, 350 characters (or about 40 words) should be more than enough to tell a little about yourself, your services with one or two relevant keywords properly placed. Just be sure to use those keywords as anchor text when linking to the page that covers that keyword’s topic on your site. Many directories will let you have two links in the bio section and all allow at least one.
6.) And I saved the big one for last. Provide unique content to each article directory. No article or newsletter publisher wishes to have a bunch of duplicate content so carefully rephrase at least 30% to 35% of the article to make it unique. This will help both the publisher and the quality of your resulting inbound your links.
Big Tip: Writing dozens or even hundreds of article variations to eliminate duplicate content can take a great deal of time. Then manually submitting them to hundreds of directories takes even longer. A nice solution is using an article distribution service that allows you to enter slight variations to specific sections of your article and then combines them in unique ways to provide unique content for the search engines and readers. I am NOT talking about a system that creates robotic substitutions based on replacing similar words from a thesaurus. That produces junk. I’m talking about a system that allows you to submit your own text with alternate sentences or even whole paragraphs. This works amazingly well and can easily create over one thousand article variations based on about twenty extra minutes of your time when you submit your article. And of course, write as many variations of your bio as you can too.

They even review the article to ensure it is a good candidate for publication, which gives you advice from a professional editor for free. They do it to help protect their own reputation as well but the benefits to you are immeasurable.
Google SEO Linking Strategy Three: Use a three way linking system.
Google has discounted the use of straight reciprocal links to the point that many people feel they are not worth the time and effort to obtain. I still use them sparingly but I avoid reciprocal linking systems like the plague. Google hates them and they are so easy to detect that you might as well put a banner on your site saying “Hey Google, I use a link farm!”
Three way linking, however, is another story. Reciprocal linking is very easy to detect but 3 way links are altogether different. It works like this… Site 1 links to Site 2 and then Site 2 links to Site 3. And finally Site 3 links to Site 1, or even to another site in the chain. In short; every link is a true and verifiable one way inbound link.
If you are part of a group of similar sites, this is well worth doing. But if you need to build links quickly or don’t have the time to set this up yourself, you can use a service like 3 Way Linker (http://www.3WayLinker.com). It’s the ideal “set it and forget it” option and gives you full control over important aspects of linking.
